"This looks like a good spot," Chris decided, releasing his hold on Fluttershy’s hand to unfold the blanket he was carrying.

Shaking it out, he then carefully spread it on the ground. Once he was finished smoothing the sheet down, Fluttershy settled on the blanket, placing the basket she held beside her and opening it up. She felt around inside it carefully, not being able to see too well since it was so dark out already. But a night picnic in the summer was the perfect time for something like this.

"There!" Chris said suddenly, grabbing her attention and directing her to the first firefly lighting up in the darkness. But it didn’t take too long for her to point out another of the beetles, and soon more began to appear, filling the evening air with tiny flashing lights.

Chris sat back, watching the fireflies as they flew around them. “Lots a’ males out right now…” he murmured. Catching Fluttershy’s gaze as she handed him one of the sandwiches they packed, he grinned. “You can tell by the pattern that they’re males.” He waved a free hand in the air at the bugs flying just above them. “See how it’s a consistent blinking? These are the males trying to attract the females. The females use more of a “blink blink pause” pattern to draw the males’ attention, when they find one they like…”

He glanced at her again, and while it was still too dark to really see well, he managed to catch the small smile on her face that meant she was humoring him more than anything.

"…Aaaaaaaand you already know this, huh?" With an embarrassed chuckle, he rubbed the back of his neck. "Sorry…I know I can ramble on sometimes."

Fluttershy shook her head. “Mm no, that’s okay. I don’t mind.”

He laughed, taking a bite of his sandwich. “Still…y’know you’re free to stop me when I start going on like that.”

She smiled. “Really, it’s all right. I like listening to you talk.”

"Yeah, but if you’re gonna listen, it might as well be something you haven’t heard before." Swallowing another bite of sandwich, he watched the fireflies around them for a moment before glancing back at her. "Did I ever tell you how Martin and I got firefly discs for the Creature Power suits?"

Fluttershy blinked. “No, I don’t think so…you guys have Firefly suits?”

The grin returning, Chris placed his sandwich down to give her his full attention. “Now there’s a story. See, it all started when…”
