More Persona
Monday, 26 September 2011 23:01Bwahaha. So apparently, the original seiyuu for the character Kanji in the game (and soon, the anime) is Seki Tomakazu, who voices Kyo in Fruits Basket. I have no idea why I find this so amusing...mostly I think it's because I'm used to the English dub of the game, where Kanji is voiced pretty deep, and whenever I think of Seki-sama I immediately think of his Kyo-voice, which is...not as deep. So trying to imagine big teddy bear Kanji with Kyo's voice is pretty funny.
Although, I did hear Kanji's Japanese voice, and it's a lot deeper than I've ever heard Seki-sama's voice go. Huh. I'll need to hear more of it when the anime comes out, heehee.
But anyway, the original reason for this post: Story ideas!
I really want to write some family fluff for this fandom. I've seen a few really good ones on FF.net and wanted to try it out myself. Dojima is one of those awkward fathers, which is part of the reason I love him, because of his struggles to deal with not only his daughter after his wife's death, but also his nephew who he has to look after for a year. And in the game he already admits that he was having a hard time with his daughter, and then his nephew comes along...who, apparently, he hasn't seen since the kid was in diapers.
So, story idea #1: Since Dojima mentions that he used to change Souji's diapers, I wanted to write a fic where he does just that. Takes place way before the game, when Souji's just a baby and Dojima isn't married to Chisato yet (and starts to get extremely nervous when she starts hinting about them having kids of their own). Basically Chisato and Souji's mom are on a girl's day out, leaving Dojima to take care of Souji...and just generally be awkward about it, haha. Not much, but I'm hoping it'll be cute.
Story idea #2: Takes place during the game, when Dojima takes the protagonist down to the police station to question him about his involvement with the murders and kidnappings. In the game, even if you pick the option of telling Dojima the truth, he doesn't believe you (but who can blame him? You're talking about entering another world through the TV...). Then Dojima says something along the lines about how he thought you were beginning to trust him, like you'd trust your own father. And when I read that, I actually hurt for the protagonist. I thought that was a pretty harsh statement, especially when you flip it around and consider that your uncle doesn't trust you enough to know that you're not really involved with the murders and such. So the story takes a look at the aftermath of such an accusation, sometime when Dojima's in the hospital after Nanako gets kidnapped and he asks you to bring her back. Because he trusts you enough to find his daughter...just not when it comes to the murder and kidnappings. Thanks, Uncle...
And of course, I just wouldn't be me if I didn't at least try to come up with a shippy story. I finally got a Kanji/Rise fic idea! It's not much, though: Just as Rise is on the verge of returning to her life as an idol, she has to get her tonsils taken out, and she's worried that she won't be able to perform as well as she used to. And Kanji - big, lovable guy that he is - tries to cheer her up, Kanji-style...whatever that is.
The last one is a bit more longer than the others, and it'd probably be the only chapter story I'd write for Persona 4. The story takes place after the Good/Normal ending; after defeating Amenosagiri, the fog is lifted from Inaba but still lingers in the TV world. The protagonist, Souji, goes home to his parents in the city, leaving his friends and family in Inaba behind. A few months later, though, he and his parents are in a terrible car crash, where he is the only survivor. He returns to Inaba to live once again with Dojima and Nanako, and will have to finish the remainder of his last year in high school there. But his return to Inaba triggers some bizarre events, such as Souji's own "kidnapping", where he's taken to the TV world (shrouded in even more fog than before). The Investigation Team go through Souji's dungeon and eventually have to face Souji's Shadow, despite the fact that Souji had already unlocked his Persona a long time ago. Also, his Shadow is somewhat different than when the Shadows of the rest of the Investigation Team, because the only reason Souji's Shadow was able to come out, and the reason it grew more powerful, was because Souji was unconscious; letting his unconscious emotions run rampant because he wasn't awake to face them.
The way I view Souji's potential Shadow is kind of interesting. A lot of people think Souji's hidden thoughts would be a lot more like Adachi, where he acts a certain way despite thinking that he's too good or above everyone else. But to me, I always think of Souji's Shadow revealing that Souji is actually a really shy, maybe even timid person. And what I envision is though Souji acts kind of calm and collected, he's really kind of lonely and wants other people to like him. So he's learned to listen to a situation, and adapt himself to become what others want or need him to be. If he doesn't, he's worried that people won't notice him and won't like him. But it's hard, it's frustrating constantly having to please other people...trying to please everyone, especially when you feel you can't tell other people that.
Ultimately, it all stems back to Souji's parents; the general consensus is Souji's family often moved around a lot due to his parents' jobs. But no matter what concerns or fears Souji had about moving, changing schools, having to meet new people or new friends (or no friends, sometimes), he felt he could never tell his parents because they needed him to not make a fuss, to be obedient and do as they say to make all their lives easier. And he just fell into that kind of role as he grew older, learning what people needed and didn't need at any given time, and figuring out how to change himself in order to be that kind of person.
Anyway, the Investigation Team manages to rescue Souji eventually, which leads to his Shadow turning back into Izanagi...except Souji already unlocked Izanagi before, back when he first moved to Inaba. So it doesn't make any sense that his Persona came before his Shadow, which is usually the other way around. But Izanagi tells them (much to all of their surprise, because other people's Personae have never spoken before) that all of this was done in an effort to get Souji out of the way (i.e., to kill him). And after some time, they discover exactly who tried to do something like that in the first place; Izanami.
Even though Izanami was the one who gave Souji the power to unlock his Persona in the first place, she had done so as part of her plan to cover the world with Shadows, since she believed that's what humans wanted. But she never expected Souji's continuous search for the truth, which kind of threatens her plans a little bit. She also discovers later that one of his Personae - and in fact, his very first one - takes the form of Izanagi, she realizes that Souji must be one of the 1500 that her husband, the real Izanagi promised to rise up after what happened between them, making her all the more willing to kill Souji.
Eventually, the Investigation Team finally confront Izanami, which will more or less follow what happens during the True Ending final battle with her. But near the end, when Souji returns from limbo or wherever he was, Izanagi kind of takes over him, and Izanagi and Izanami kind of duke it out a bit before Izanagi uses Myriad of Truths and defeats Izanami. Then the rest of the Investigation Team, somehow, come back and have to reach Souji in order for him to snap out of Izanagi's control.
That's all I really have for it so far...but hopefully I'll get more of the details ironed out. Heehee.
