Notes: Bold text = song lyrics. This is a brotherly story between Carrot and Marron, and possibly one of the weirdest stories I've ever written. It takes place when Marron is about.....I don't know, two? Three? In any case, Marron doesn't talk well in this story, and any misspellings in Marron's speech is intentional.....So yeah.....

Summary: 'Just look over your shoulder and I’ll be there always.'

You’ll Be In My Heart

Carrot sighed, walking down the familiar path. He wanted to be away from home, away from his parents, and away from his annoying little brother. Especially his brother. Ever since the little kid came along, everything has gone wrong.

Ever since Marron, his stupid little brother, came along, his parents had been always fussing over him and stuff, paying more attention to the little brat than to him. If that wasn’t enough, Marron would always follow him and bother him, never giving Carrot a moment of peace.

He kicked away a rock that was in front of his path. He couldn’t believe how jealous he felt, but it wasn’t fair. Just because the kid was younger than him, did that mean that they could baby him? Sure the kid was only three, but he was only a year younger than Carrot. The elder Glace boy did want some attention every once in a while.

“Cawwot!” a familiar voice called out to him. Carrot froze, cringing as he recognized the voice. Turning around, he saw the small child running after him, holding a green ball. Seeing that his older brother had stopped, Marron stopped too. “Catch!” he said, throwing the ball at him.

Carrot caught the ball before it had a chance to hit his face. Marron clapped his small hands, then ran up to him.

“Marron, what was that for?”

The small boy smiled. “You look kinda lonewy by yoursef. I want you to pway catch wif me, Cawwot.”

Carrot coked his eyebrow. “Play catch?”

Little Marron nodded, his black hair bobbing up and down.

“I don’t feel like playing right now.” He placed the ball back in Marron’s tiny hands, and turned around to walk away. He stopped, though, when he felt something tug on his shirt.

“Cawwot?” Marron said. He held the ball out towards him.

Angered that this stupid kid couldn’t take a hint, Carrot slapped the ball away, out of his hands. “I don’t want to play!” he yelled. “I just want you to leave me ALONE!! Okay?!”

He watched as his little brother’s eyes got teary, the gold covered over by a thin film. Seeing no change in his brother, Marron turned away, his shoulders drooping, and walked back towards the house, only stopping to pick up the green ball.

Carrot sighed, shaking his head, before walking in the opposite direction Marron had gone in.

Carrot let the door shut, walking into the kitchen. He met his mother there, who was cooking dinner.

“Ah, there you are Carrot,” Apricot said, pushing ebony bangs out of her face. “Have you seen your brother?”

“I saw him earlier, but he left,” the small boy replied. He bit his tongue, deciding it wasn’t wise to tell her why Marron left.

“Do you think you could go find him? It’s almost time for dinner.”

“Aw, Mom, do I have to?”

“Carrot! He’s your little brother! You should be taking care of him.”

“But you and Dad do that already!” he argued, fighting back his tears.

She looked at him. “Because he’s not as strong as you are. You’ve seen how he is. And besides, it doesn’t matter how much we try to take care of him. He always wants to get away to be with you.”

Carrot blinked. “With me?”

“Yes. He admires you. Haven’t you seen it? He loves to talk about how he wants to be like you as he gets older, and how great you are. He wants to be around you so much because you’re his idol.”

Carrot felt a small twinge in his heart. When his mother went back to cooking, he slipped out of the house to find his brother.

* * *

He ran as fast as his legs could take him, searching for his little brother. This was the direction he had seen Marron go, so where was he?

He heard some laughing nearby, and then some sniffling. He recognized one of the voices, and peered through some bushes to see three boys around his age, throwing around the green ball, just out of Marron’s reach. The younger boy would jump up for it, but they had an easy time keeping it away from him.

Angered, Carrot ran and tackled the boy currently holding the ball. They rolled on the ground for a while, before Carrot was finally able grab the ball from the other boy. He recognized the boy as one he would play with occasionally, but he didn’t remember the kid’s name. Oh well, that didn’t matter anyway.

He got up off him, standing between the three and Marron, wiping the dirt from his face.

“Carrot,” the biggest one, the one he had taken down, said, “what’d ya do that for?”

“You can’t mess with my little brother without messing with me,” the young Glace replied.

“That’s your little brother?!” another one said.

“He’s totally different from you!” the last one replied.

“Yeah?!” he fired back. “Well, what’s it to ya?!”

“He’s a strange one,” the biggest said. “He’s not normal. He doesn't get mad or sad or anything! He's so weird!”

“What do you know? Get outta here!”

They took a step back, before the biggest turned to leave, the other two following him.

Carrot let out a relieved sigh, looking up as it started to rain. Ignoring it, he turned to face Marron, kneeling down to meet him eye to eye.

He heard Marron sniffle, and though it was raining, he gently wiped the young boy’s tears that finally freed themselves to fall.

Come, stop you’re crying
It will be alright
Just take my hand, hold it tight
I will protect you from all around you
I will be here, don’t you cry

Carrot was surprised, though, when Marron hugged him suddenly. Another stab of guilt shot through him, as he felt his younger brother tremble in his arms.

“It’s okay, Marron, don’t worry. I’m here for you now.”

For one so small, you seem so strong
My arms will hold you, keep you safe and warm
This bond between us can’t be broken
I will be here, don’t you cry

Marron looked up at his older brother. “I fought you didn’t wike me, Cawwot.”

“I’m sorry I got mad at you, Marron. I didn’t mean to be so angry with you. I just wanted to be alone for awhile. I shouldn’t have yelled at you like that.”

Marron just looked at his older brother, blinking. Carrot swallowed nervously. Would Marron be angry with him?

He wasn’t. He just settled in Carrot’s protective embrace.

You’ll be in my heart
Yes, you’ll be in my heart
From this day on now and forever more
You’ll be in my heart
No matter what they say
You’ll be here in my heart, always

“What wewe vey saying, Cawwot?” the small boy asked? “‘Bout me being diffewent fwom you? And me being not nowmal?”

“They’re stupid,” Carrot replied. “Don’t mind them.”

“Is it bad being diffewent?”

“No, of course not.”

“But they said we wewe diffewent.”

“Well, we are kind of different. But we’re still brothers. And brothers always have something in common they share.”

Why can’t they understand the way we feel?
They just don’t trust what they can’t explain
I know we’re different
But deep inside us, we’re not that different at all

“Cawwot?”

“Yea, Marron?”

“Th.....thank you.”

“Thanks? For what?”

“Fow hewping me.”

“Sure Marron. That’s what brothers are for.”

You’ll be in my heart
Yes, you’ll be in my heart
From this day on now and forever more

“But what if dey come back?” he asked in small voice. “What if dey stawt picking on me again?”

“Ignore them.”

“But what if dey won’t go away? Just wike befowe. When I was going home, vey fowwowed me, and took my bawl.”

“They’re idiots, really. The only thing you can do is ignore them.”

Don’t listen to them
‘Cuz what do they know?
We need each other to have, to hold
They’ll see in time, I know

“But you should know, Marron, that I won’t always be around to protect you.”

The small boy looked up at his older brother, a puzzled look on his face.

“I can’t always protect you. I can’t. That wouldn’t be right. But, when they’re picking on you, and I’m not there, you have to be tough, okay? You’ll be able to handle it. I know you can.”

Marron had no idea what his brother was rambling about. But for now, he didn’t care. He just enjoyed being able to be close to his older brother.

When destiny calls you, you must be strong
I may not be with you, but you’ve got to hold on
They’ll see in time, I know
We’ll show them together, ‘cause

Marron suddenly pulled away, taking the green ball from Carrot. “Cawwot?”

“Yeah?”

Marron looked up at him, a large smile on his face. “Wiwl you pway catch wif me now?”

Carrot blinked in surprise. “You still want me to play catch with you?”

The child nodded.

“Even after I yelled at you?”

He nodded again.

“Maybe not now, Marron. It’s raining.”

Marron looked up at the dark clouds in the sky, the rain pouring upon the two boys. “Wiwl you pway wif me aftew the wain stops?”

Carrot blinked in more surprise, but smiled, ruffling the small boy’s damp hair. “Sure, Marron. We’ll play when the rain stops.”

You’ll be in my heart
Believe me, you’ll be in my heart
(I’ll be there)
From this day on now and forever more

~*~*~*~

Carrot opened his eyes, smiling at that memory. He had no idea why he remembered that day, but he figured it had something to do with the rain that was falling on and around him.

That happened thirteen years ago, when he was four and Marron was three. Since that day, the two of them had become really close, Carrot protecting Marron before he had gotten his magical abilities (though Marron didn’t know that), and vice versa afterwards. Still, no matter who was protecting who, or whatever was happening, they bond they shared had been getting stronger.

You’ll be in my heart
(You’ll be here in my heart)
No matter what they say
You’ll be here in my heart, always

Carrot looked up when he noticed something white move against the dark surroundings. Marron’s damp hair billowed around him as he walked to wherever he was going. Carrot couldn’t help but notice the sad fix on his little brother’s face. For some reason, Marron seemed to want to be alone more often than he normally did nowadays. Carrot had no idea why, but it reminded him of back then, when he was still jealous of all the attention Marron got from their parents when they were younger.

An idea crept into his head, as a smile formed on his lips. Rising to his feet, he went in the other direction. For this idea, he needed something.

Always
I’ll be with you
I’ll be there for you always, always and always
Just look over your shoulder

Marron sighed, watching the rain fall. It wasn’t uncommon that he went off by himself, but it seemed to be happening a lot lately. He wasn’t sure why, but he felt somewhat disconnected from the others, almost like he didn't belong. He couldn’t explain the reason, he just did for some reason.

He felt a little relaxed out there, though. The quietness of the area, save the sound of the rain falling. The stimulating smell of the light rain penetrated his senses. Still, he did get lonely every once in a while. But who would understand him?

“Marron,” he heard a voice call out to him. Turning around slowly, he saw his brother standing there.

Just look over your shoulder

Carrot smiled slyly, pulling something out from behind his back. “Catch!”

Marron reeled in surprise, catching the object before it hit him in the face. Looking down, he saw that he held a bright, green ball.

He looked up at his brother, confusion filling his golden eyes. “Brother?” he questioned.

Carrot shrugged, the smile never leaving his face. “You look kinda lonely by yourself,” he replied. “I want you to play catch with me, Marron.”

Just look over your shoulder
And I’ll be there always

The End
