Summary: N/A
Chris would never admit it, but he was actually kind of glad that Lucky Charm the Blissey had accidentally taken his Wurmple egg. If she hadn’t, then he never would have gotten the chance to meet her owner, Fluttershy.
And getting to know the shy Pokemon caretaker was really something special; he couldn’t quite describe the excited feeling he had whenever he went out to see her. The travel required of his work made that difficult sometimes, but the convenient - and entirely true - excuse of Eli, his Volcorona, wanting to visit Vivi, her Vivillon, had them returning to Fluttershy’s cottage as often as possible. He wanted Eli to be happy, after all, and while the Volcorona was with Vivi, Chris took the opportunity to spend time with Fluttershy, helping her take care of the Pokemon around her home and getting to know her.
Might as well, right?
But it was one time as they were getting to know each other, deciding to introduce the other to their Pokémon team, that Chris learned something very important about Fluttershy: She was terrified of Dragon-types.
And sure, Dragon-type Pokemon could look dangerous and ferocious, especially ones like his Garchomp. But they were just as friendly and as cool as any other Pokémon. And Chris was sure that if Fluttershy just got to know a Dragon Pokémon, like she knew the Pokémon that she so loved and took care of around home, then she wouldn’t be so afraid of them. So he tried to get Fluttershy used to his Garchomp, having the Dragon-type out along with Eli whenever he came by to visit. Still, Fluttershy seemed to have a hard time warming up to his Garchomp, still appearing a little frightful whenever the Mach Pokémon was nearby.
Though having a name like “Razormouth” probably didn’t help much.
Still, Chris was determined to show Fluttershy that Razormouth, like all Dragon-types, was actually very friendly, and that she had nothing to be afraid of. And Razormouth seemed to pick up on his intentions; he was always very careful and quiet around her, doing everything he could not to scare her. And he always stayed close to her Clefairy, Dion, to help Fluttershy feel safe.
Really, it was a surprise that anyone could be scared of Razormouth. But while Fluttershy didn’t seem to mind his presence, she still had yet to really interact with Razormouth herself. So Chris decided to show how much fun Dragon Pokémon could be.
And what better way to do that than by playing a game?
A common game to play with Pokémon was throwing a yarn ball, and having the Pokémon bounce it back. Yarn balls were softer than rubber ones, so they wouldn’t hurt too much when the Pokemon bounced them back. So borrowing a yarn ball from Fluttershy, Chris decided to play the game with Razormouth while Fluttershy sat off to the side to watch, Dion at her side and Eli and Vivi close by as well.
"Okay, Razormouth," Chris said, pulling back his arm to throw the yarn ball, "bounce it back to me! Ready?"
A game was the perfect way to show Fluttershy how playful and fun Dragons could be. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite work when the game wasn’t played right.
Razormouth tilted his head, watching as Chris threw the yarn ball above his head. As it began to fall closer, he caught the yarn ball in his open mouth and began gnawing at it.
Chris exhaled in loud exasperation. “Razormouth! Not again!”
Razormouth never really was good at this game.
After chewing up the yarn ball for a bit, Razormouth then approached him with a soft grumble, his tail wagging eagerly as he tried to offer the yarn ball back to Chris. With a glance at Fluttershy, Chris couldn’t help but huff a little. “No, I’m not gonna throw it again,” he said. “There’s no point of playing if you’re not gonna bounce it back.”
The yarn ball was already ruined without having the Mach Pokemon chew it up even more. Not to mention he was sure the gnawing with all those teeth wasn’t helping Fluttershy’s fear any.
Razormouth gave an apologetic little whine, dropping the soaked yarn ball into his claws to lick Chris’ face. Having to hold back a laugh, he tried to push the Dragon away. “No,” he repeated. “No more.”
"H…H-He said he was…sorry…"
Chris looked over in surprise when Fluttershy spoke, watching as she slowly rose to her feet and brushed off stray blades of grass. Hesitantly she approached the two of them, and though she still kept a wary eye on Razormouth, she placed a hand on Chris’ arm with a small smile.
"Maybe just…give it another try?" she suggested.
Blinking, Chris then couldn’t help but grin a little. “All right.” Turning to Razormouth, he took the dripping yarn ball. “One more.”
With a pleased rumble, Razormouth then went back to stand in his spot, tail wagging as he waited for the yarn ball.
Looking over the yarn for a moment, Chris smile grew wider as he held it out to Fluttershy. “Here…why don’t you try?”
"M…M-Me…?" She blushed a little, glancing from the yarn ball to Razormouth. "I…I-I don’t know…"
He smiled in reassurance. “Don’t worry, it’s just a game. Besides, I’m right here. Nothing’s gonna happen.”
Looking at him, Fluttershy then nodded and carefully took the yarn ball from him. Looking toward Razormouth, she threw the ball as hard as she could to him.
Which…wasn’t very hard really, as the yarn ball fell short a few feet, rolling toward Razormouth the rest of the way.
Fluttershy blushed darker, rubbing her arm. “I-I…I’m not very good…”
Chris chuckled softly. “It’s okay…besides, it doesn’t look like it bothers Razormouth any.”
As he spoke, Razormouth had reach down and picked up the yarn ball, quickly coming back over. Feeling Fluttershy stiffen just a bit next to him, Chris put a gentle hand on her shoulder. “It’s okay…” he said softly. “Just relax…everything’s gonna be fine.”
She glanced at him again and nodded, taking a breath as Razormouth stood in front of them, eagerly offer the yarn ball to her. She looked to Chris, and at his nod of encouragement she took the yarn ball from the Dragon, who went back to stand in his spot to wait for the yarn ball.
Fluttershy threw it again, and even though it still fell short this time Razormouth moved to catch it in his mouth, once again gnawing on it.
Chris groaned. “Razormouth!” Running his hands through his hair, he shook his head. “Sorry…looks like we’ll have to get you a new one.”
Fluttershy spared him a small smile. “It’s okay. I have a lot of them…”
Razormouth soon came back over, tail wagging as he offered the yarn ball back to them. Chris rolled his eyes, rubbing the Mach Pokemon’s snout. “This is really not how you play the game, Razormouth.”
"It’s really more like playing fetch," Fluttershy giggled.
And when she reached over to gently pet the side of Razormouth’s head without even thinking about it, Chris simply smiled and said nothing.
