Title: Believe in Myself
Fandom: Sorcerer Hunters
Character(s): Marron Glace
Genre: General
Rating: K/G
Disclaimers: "Believe in Myself" © Sonic Adventure, Sorcerer Hunters © Satoru Akahori
Notes: Bold text = song lyrics, Marron POV. This is about Marron as he's trying to get his magic under control. U_U It's not a very good one, and it's mostly based on the anime (in fact, it's more based on the anime....not a scrap of manga influence about it....). I just really like this song, and ideas just never die unless I right them down, so that's how this story came to birth......I wrote it awhile ago, when my writing kind of sucked (not that it's much better, mind you....). I think I took the lyrics too literally in the story....So yeah....enjoy.....

Summary: 'I wanna fly high so I can reach the highest of all the heavens. Somebody will be waiting for me, so I have got to fly higher. Gotta keep goin’, everything is a brand new challenge for me. I will believe in myself, this is the only start for me.'

Believe In Myself

My eyes darted from page to page, word to word of the book I was reading. Turning the page, I read down, my mind trying to absorb what the book was trying to teach me.

Uncomfortable, I squirmed around in my chair, pushing away from the desk I sat at. I needed a little break.

My eyes turned to the window, where my brother and the others were playing. I smiled, watching them. Tira had invited me to play with them earlier, but I declined. I had decided to continue my studies.

A few months ago, I discovered that I had the potential to use Eastern Magic. Big Momma, who had taken care of my brother and me ever since our mother died, had decided that I should try to harness that magic.

Studying about Eastern Magic was one thing, but actually training to use it was a different matter entirely. It was difficult for me to focus my energy into creating an attack.

But I wanted to learn. I wanted to become stronger, to harness this power flowing inside me.

There was a knock on the door of my bedroom. Looking up, I saw Big Momma standing at the doorway.

“Marron,” she said. “It’s time for your training.”

I stood up from my chair, closing the book on my desk. “Yes, Big Momma.”

When all alone in my chair,
I just go about wishing
I wanna be strong
I really wanna be trusted

~*~*~*~

As I awoke, I felt myself being gently placed on a bed, a blanket covering my body. Opening my eyes, a blurred figure hovered over me. As my vision cleared, the figure focused into Carrot.

“Brother?” I asked weakly.

“Hey, Marron.”

“What happened?”

“You were training, and you passed out.”

Slowly, I sat up. “Again?” He nodded. I let out a sigh.

“Don’t worry about it,” my brother said. “Big Momma warned you that that would happen, remember?”

I looked down at my hands gripping the sheet. “I know, but. . . . .”

“But what?”

“I’m beginning to wonder if I can ever handle it. I mean, will I ever really be able to control my magic?”

I felt a hand rest on top of my head, and I looked up at my brother. “You’ll get it,” he said. “Don’t worry.”

“But. . . .”

“You have to trust yourself, Marron. Be strong.”

Be strong? Can I be strong . . . . . like my brother?

When all alone in my bed,
I just go about yearning
I wanna be cool
I also wanna be like him

“I don’t know if I can be strong like you, Brother.”

“Like me?” he asked, slightly confused. “That’s not what I meant, Marron.”

I wasn’t sure if I understood what Carrot was saying.

“What I’m saying, is that you have to find your own way through this. You’re the only one that I know who can use Eastern Magic, so you really can’t ask others for help. But if you just believe in yourself, then you can do anything. Okay?”

I nodded. “All right, Brother. I’ll do my best.”

He ruffled my shoulder-length hair. “I know Marron.” And he got up, as I lay back down in bed, and left, gently closing the door behind him.

But that’s not something I can do so easily
This is not simply my way, my style
Gotta get a hold of my life

~*~*~*~

I sat there, alone in the dark, trying to get all my thoughts together. I had a hard time sleeping, despite how tired I was. I yawned, looking out the window at the dark night sky. The stars glimmered above the earth, winking down at us stuck on the ground.

I’ll try my best. I told my brother that I’ll do my best to handle my magical abilities. I’ll overcome this challenge, and any challenge that faces me, to make my brother proud of me.

I wanna fly high so I can reach the highest of all the heavens
Somebody will be waiting for me, so I have got to fly higher
Gotta keep goin’, everything is a brand new challenge for me
I will believe in myself
This is the only start for me

~*~*~*~

The sun shone through my window, right into my eyes. My eyes fluttered open, as I sat up and stretched my arms. Rubbing my eyes, I got out of bed and headed out of my room.

I yawned. I had that same dream again. That strange dream where my brother was there with me, and suddenly he wasn’t. It was the weirdest dream. In the end, though, I would save him using my abilities. I had no idea if that meant I something was going to happen to my brother, or if I was just excited about having Eastern Magic, but it had occurred after I discovered my new ability.

When all alone in my sleep,
I just go about dreaming
I see myself there,
Having the same adventure

“Marron?”

I spun around, seeing Big Momma. “Yes?” I said.

“I just wanted to tell you about how much you’re improving in your magic.”

“Thank you.”

“If you would like, I could give you a few pointers on how to improve your skills.”

I was about to answer, when I thought about what my brother said last night. “I……appreciate the thought, Big Momma, but no thank you.”

“Why not?”

“The pointers that you provide for me are sure to help me, but if you help me, I will never truly understand how my magic works at all.”

I wasn’t sure if the look on her face was a good or bad reaction. Suddenly, she patted my head, a smile on her face. “Good, Marron,” she said. “You’re learning.”

I smiled, nodding.

If I just follow you,
I will not see the light
Now’s the time to find my way through this life
I’m trying so hard to be strong

~*~*~*~

Turning the page, I read what else the book was teaching about Eastern Magic. Big Momma said that I had to learn as much as I could about it in order to handle it.

I looked up at the sky, a soft breeze causing my hair to sway. The clouds and tips of the trees began to dance to the beat of the wind, leaves hovering into the air. As it died down, the leaves fell to the earth once again.

Mother, I know you’re part of the reason I have this special ability. I may not understand them at the moment, but thank you for them. I pray they’ll come in handy someday. IF I ever get the chance to uncover them.

I wanna fly high so I can reach the highest of all the heavens
Somebody will be waiting for me, so I have got to fly higher
Gotta keep goin’, everything is a brand new challenge for me
I will believe in myself
This is the only start for me

~*~*~*~

“Marron?” Big Momma asked. “Are you sure you’re ready?”

I closed my eyes, swallowing nervously. “I. . . . . I think so.”

“This test is only to see how much you’ve progressed. There’s no reason to feel pressure.”

I wasn’t sure if that helped. I was still nervous. It was to show how much I’ve progressed, but if I didn’t succeed, what would that mean?

I tightly clutched the ofuda ward in my hand. What am I going to do? If I failed, I………

“Hey Marron!” I opened my eyes in surprise. Both Big Momma and I turned our heads to see Carrot coming down the path, followed by the Misu girls, Tira and Chocolate, and Gateau.

They stopped next to Big Momma. “Come on, Marron!” Gateau said.

“Yeah, Marron!” Chocolate agreed.

“You can do it!” Tira said.

“That’s right, Marron,” my brother said. “We know you can do it!”

I sighed in relief, smiling. Nodding, I closed my eyes, releasing my tight grip on the charm. I could feel the energy coursing through my body, transferring to the slip of paper in my hand. I could feel the warmth the ofuda began to omit, and even with my eyes closed, I could sense it glowing.

Many friends help me out,
in return I help them
Certain things I can do
and there are things that only I can do
No one’s alone!

I opened my eyes suddenly, as bits of confetti burst out of the ward. White doves suddenly appeared, taking flight into the sky, swirling around me and the others.

The others gazed in awe as the birds fluttered around them, confetti raining down on us.

Big Momma smiled. “Congratulations, Marron. You have passed this test.”

I sank down to the ground, sitting. That had taken a lot of energy. I was aware that I was panting hard, but the smile on my face never went away. I couldn’t believe it. That was too incredible. I heard the others cheer.

“All right!”

“Way to go!”

“You did it!”

Carrot ran up to me. “I knew you could do it, Marron!” he said.

I nodded. “Thank you.”

He looked at me, puzzled. “For what?”

I shook my head, still smiling. “It’s nothing.”

But he understood then. He patted my head, ruffling my ebony hair. He offered his hand to me, and I grabbed it, as he helped me to my feet.

The birds began to fly away, up towards the crystal blue sky. They flew towards the heavens, and someday, I would be able to follow them.

I wanna fly high so I can reach the highest of all the heavens
Somebody will be waiting for me, so I have got to fly higher
Gotta keep goin’, everything is a brand new challenge for me
I will believe in myself
This is the only start for me

The End
