”Anyway,” Wayne cleared his throat, hoping to change the subject, “what’s the mission this time?”
"Well…" Magee hesitated, twirling her pen in her fingers, "we’re still waiting for the representative from the Toy Behavior Observation Bureau."
Wayne scowled. “We’re waiting for a T-BOB elf? Seriously?”
"Wayne, I know how you feel about them…"
"You mean how everyone feels about them,” Wayne retorted. “C’mon, Magee, you know what those guys are like.”
Magee sighed as she rubbed her temples. “Well, what do you expect me to do? T-BOB is the one with details for your assignment, but the orders come from the Big Guy.”
Wayne groaned, sitting back in his chair. “Perfect. This’ll be a jolly holiday…”
Lanny frowned, curiously looking from his partner to Magee. Though he had heard about T.B.O.B., or T-BOB as referred to by most other elves, he didn’t really know much about it. He remembered some of his friends back in school pushing him to join the unit, but his heart had been set on joining Prep and Landing that he never really looked into any other department. The most he knew about it was based on rumors he’d heard here and there, but he couldn’t figure out why the bureau seemed to annoy Wayne so much.
"What’s wrong with T-BOB?" he finally managed to ask.
Wayne scoffed. “You mean what’s right with it.”
"Now, Wayne," Magee chastised, "you know that what they do is important, too." Even as she spoke the words, though, her tone seemed to indicate that she didn’t believe herself either.
Easily picking up on her doubt as well, Wayne rolled his eyes. “Oh, come on. None of the elves there do anything.”
"Come now, we know that’s not true.”
The three turned towards the elf standing at the door, looking into the office from behind the glare of his thick horn-rimmed glasses. He entered the room stiffly, walking up to Magee’s desk with a rigid posture. His suit was likewise as straight and crisp, not so much as a wrinkle or a sound even as he removed the file he carried under his arm.
Wayne snorted again. “Well, well, if it isn’t The Bob himself. I’m surprised you actually left your office.”
The taller elf looked towards him, a deep frown set on his pale features. “Always a pleasure, Wayne,” he replied, his tone equally as derisive.
Magee cleared her throat, hoping to break the thick tension. “Glad you two remember each other,” she muttered sarcastically. Then she motioned to Lanny. “Robert, this is Wayne’s new partner, Lanny. Lanny,” she said as the younger elf rose to his feet, “this is Robert, chief of the Toy Behavior Observation Bureau.”
"Nice to meet you," Lanny said; though it was difficult to ignore the sullen look on his partner’s face, he still wanted to be polite as he could. Especially to an elf he was meeting for the first time.
Robert seemed to study Lanny for a moment before giving him a small nod. “Likewise,” he said. Though the answer was brief, the tone behind it was much more civil than the one he had spoken to Wayne with.
"So," Lanny said, unable to hold back his curiosity any longer, "what exactly does a T-BOB elf do?”
Robert frowned. “An elf in T.B.O.B. is in charge of monitoring the actions of toys to ensure that they do not violate the rules we set for them.”
Lanny blinked, glancing at Wayne who simply rolled his eyes again. “That sounds…interesting.”
"It is a very important job, despite what some others may believe,” Robert said, shooting Wayne a pointed glare as he spoke. Wayne simply shrugged. Then he added, “We’re also in charge of salvaging discarded toys so they may perhaps be reissued to new homes.”
"Oh. Well, that part sounds pretty cool."
"Yeah, except none of the watchers ever go down to get the toys," Wayne said, shaking his head. "Only the SRS go to retrieve the toy while all the other elves in the division just sit and stare at their screens."
"The Search and Rescue Squad," Magee helpfully supplied to the confused Lanny.
"Better known as the only elves who do anything in that branch,” Wayne added, throwing Robert a disdainful look. “And even then, they’re not a hundred percent successful.”
Robert glared at Wayne. “Unfortunately, and as much as I loathe admitting, the bureau does have some problems…”
Wayne smirked.
"Which is why, against my better judgment, I require the aid of your Prep and Landing unit for this assignment."
Wayne scoffed and stood from his seat. “Why don’t you just have SRS do it? They could use more practice.”
Robert pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose. “While the Search and Rescue Squad is talented at what they do, they are not quite trained for the level of…infiltration that this mission requires.”
Lanny frowned curiously, and noticed that even Wayne seemed surprised by this. “Infiltration?” the younger elf repeated.
"What are you talking about?" Wayne asked warily.
Robert cleared his throat, glad now to have their full attention. “I am here only because Santa stated that you are effective at what you do. I cannot send SRS because they simply cannot meet the demands called for by a SORT-ing job.”
Magee gasped. “Oh Holy Night…!”
“That’s what this is about?” Wayne cried, several emotions flashing through widened eyes. “This is a SORT-ing job?”
"Uh…" Lanny scratched the back of his head, more puzzled than worried by the others’ distress. "What’s so bad about sorting?"
"SORT," Robert corrected. "A job based on the S.O.R.T. policy, which stands for Seizure Of Rebellious Toys."
"Rebellious…?" Lanny glanced at Wayne and Magee, once again taking in their frantic expressions. "There are really toys like that?"
"Not usually," Magee replied gravely. "Toys are normally good at following the rules, so the SORT policy has never really been an issue. You probably have never heard of it because it hasn’t been deployed in such a long time…not even I can remember the last time it had to be done.”
Wayne’s frown deepened as he remained quiet.
Though he noticed his partner’s silence, Lanny’s curiosity about this mysterious policy kept him from commenting on it. Instead, he asked, “So what makes a toy rebellious?”
Robert adjusted his glasses as he opened a file he held. “Though there are several rules that are placed on a toy when it is given life, there are three that are deemed most important. These are known as the rule of the Three Kings.
"Rule number one: A toy must never reveal itself to humans. Rule number two: A toy must never harm a human in any way, no matter the circumstances. And rule number three: A toy must never abandon its owner.”
Lanny nodded, his interest peaked as he listened intently. He had known of the first two rules, though he never knew they were part of a list called the Three Kings, but the third rule was something entirely new.
"Breaking any one of these three rules would be enough to implement the SORT policy," Robert continued, his gaze focused on the contents in his file. "But the toy you must retrieve…has broken all three."
"All three?” Wayne croaked as air was caught in his throat. “That can’t be right.”
"It is, I’m afraid," Robert said, his tone sharp. "Over the past decade or so, this toy has not only broken the rules of the Three Kings, but is guilty of repeated offenses and involving other toys in its actions.”
Magee, having been drinking a mug of eggnog to calm her nerves, nearly spat out her drink. “A decade or so? Why wasn’t this taken care of right away?”
Robert scoffed. “If the matter was up to me, it would have been. I would have gone to recall that toy on my own, the very moment it revealed itself, had I been able to. However, when I tried to send the motion through, Santa denied it.”
Wayne frowned, puzzled. “He said no?”
"Every time I asked," Robert sighed in exasperation. "He insisted that everything would be fine, no matter how much evidence I provided that it clearly was not. This toy continued to violate the rules, and Santa continued turning a blind eye to the situation.”
"But if Santa said no, should we really be going after this this toy?" Lanny wondered.
Robert smirked, the light reflecting off his glasses as he once again adjusted them. “Well, it seems he finally sees things my way. He sent me a message recently, requesting to bring this toy in. Finally. And it certainly is about time,” he added, placing the file on Magee’s desk. “If something is not done about this, there’s no telling how much more danger this toy will put others through…”
