Summary: "To send a letter is a good way to go somewhere without moving anything but your heart." ~ Phyllis Theroux

Of all the things Pinkie Pie expected in the mail, a postcard from Fillydelphia wasn't one of them.

"Do you know anypony from there, Pinkie?" Twilight wondered.

"I dunno," Pinkie replied. "I mean, I have lots friends, and they come from all over Equestria!"

"Well who's it from?" Rainbow Dash asked.

Turning the card over, Pinkie's eyes scanned the writing, then gasped loudly. "Cheese Sandwich!"

"Cheese Sandwich?" Fluttershy echoed. "The party planner?"

"Haven't heard that name in a while," Applejack said. "What's it say?"

"Go on, Darling!" Rarity urged. "Read it!"

With a nod, Pinkie inhaled sharply and read aloud.

Dear Pinkie Pie,

It's been a while, huh? Hope you're fantastic!

I was throwing a huge party here in Fillydelphia the other day, and it was crazy! The birthday filly really loved balloons, so they were everywhere! We even made an entire walkway of them, so the birthday filly could see the city while she was walking from above!

The balloons reminded me of you, so I thought I'd drop a line.

But I gotta get going! Lots of parties to plan! Catch you later!

"Oh, that is so sweet!" Rarity gushed.

Meanwhile, Pinkie groaned. "This is terrible!"

"Terrible?" Rainbow said, confused. "What's so terrible about that?"

"Because he wrote me a letter!" Pinkie exclaimed frantically. "And I don't have an address to write back! What if he's expecting a reply? What if he gets upset that I don't write back? What if – ?"

"Pinkie, slow down!" Twilight interjected. "I doubt he's expecting a reply if he just sent a postcard. Besides, since he travels so much, he might not have an address for you to send something anyway."

"Yeah, don't worry about it, Sugarcube," Applejack agreed. "It's probably just a passing thing."

"You think so?" Pinkie doubted.

"Absolutely."

There was another postcard the next day.

"It's from Cheese again!" Pinkie announced. "And oooooh, it's from Manehattan this time!"

"What does it say?" Fluttershy asked.

Hey Pinkie Pie!

Been a while since I've been back in my hometown! There are lots of new buildings, I almost don't recognize the place! But home is home.

"I didn't know he was from Manehattan," Rarity said. "How exciting!"

"Not that it likely matters, what with him moving around so much," Applejack replied. "Even says he hasn't been there in ages."

"Shhh!" Rainbow interrupted them. "Pinkie, what's the rest of the postcard say?"

The birthday filly really seemed to love cotton candy. So I made a whole cotton candy garden for her and her friends! Those were definitely the sweetest flowers anypony's ever had, I bet!

Do you like cotton candy? I'm sure a pony as fun as you does, but I couldn't help wondering.

Anyway, gotta get going! Another party awaits!

"Are you suuuuuuuure I'm not supposed to reply?" Pinkie wondered. "He asked me a question this time!"

"Yeah, but there's still no way to get a letter to him," Twilight pointed out. "Don't worry."

So Pinkie tried not to.

The next postcard came from Baltimare.

Hey again!

Baltimare's kinda like Manehattan; the buildings, the ponies, the atmosphere. But there's still something about it that makes it feel unique somehow. It's pretty cool, actually.

The birthday colt really likes the carnival, so we had a carnival-themed party! The roller coaster we made was bigger than the one at Rainbow Dash's birthdaversary party, but there weren't as many of the other things that made that party as epic.

We had cupcakes too, but I think the cupcakes at Dash's party tasted better. Just don't tell anypony I said that.

Cheese Sandwich

"Aww!" Pinkie said. "He likes the cupcakes I made at Dashie's party better!"

"He certainly seems to be thinking of you a lot these days, isn't he?" Rarity observed with a bit of a smile.

"I just wish I could write him back and thank him for the postcards," she pouted.

"As long as he's still traveling, there doesn't seem to be any way to reach him," Twilight tried to reassure her.

"Yeah, don't worry about it!" Rainbow added. "Just sit back and enjoy getting news from him. It's something, right?"

Pinkie smiled. "Yeah! It's pretty nice hearing from him."

There was a new postcard from Cheese Sandwich the following few weeks. Every day he was in a new location; Canterlot, Trottingham, Las Pegasus, even Saddle Arabia. And while it drove Pinkie crazy that she couldn't write back, she enjoyed reading about his party exploits.

Her friends meanwhile enjoyed hearing the different ways Cheese was reminded of her; from balloons and cupcakes, to the color of the sunset matching Pinkie's mane.

It became a ritual for them to gather at the mailbox every morning to read Cheese's postcards together.

So it became noticeable the day that the mailbox was empty.

"He is mad that I'm not writing him back!" Pinkie wailed.

"Pinkie, I'm sure that isn't it!" Twilight said, trying calm down the crying mare.

"He's probably just busy," Applejack offered. "What with all them parties 'n' travelin'."

"But he was able to write before! He probably got tired of not hearing from me, and now he's upset and doesn't want to write me anymore!"

"Darling, I'm sure there's another perfectly good explanation for all this," Rarity soothed.

"There is!" Pinkie cried. "He hates me now!"

"Pinkie…," Twilight tried, but couldn't stop the usually-bubbly mare as she suddenly ran off.

Honestly, Pinkie wasn't entirely sure why she was upset.

Or rather, she hadn't realized that she'd be so upset. She was so used to making others smile, and thought that was enough for her. She hadn't realized how much getting postcards from Cheese made her smile, or how it'd feel to not receive anymore.

But as she sat at the edge of the lake, staring at how flat her mane looked in her reflection, she realized just how much it hurt.

If only she could write back to him. If only –

"Pinkie?"

Startled, she turned around with a gasp.

"Cheese?"

The party planner almost seemed embarrassed as he slowly approached.

"Hey," he said with a small smile. "Your friends said you might be here."

Rising to her hooves, she looked at him curiously. "What are you doing here? I thought you hated me!"

He seemed surprised, even confused by that. "Hated you? Why would you think that?"

"You stopped writing me postcards! I thought you were mad that I wasn't writing back."

He rubbed the back of his head with a hoof as he glanced away. "No, I'm not mad. I just…wanted to see you this time. That's all."

"Really?" she asked, her mane starting to curl again. "You came all this way…just to see me?"

He smiled, something softer than his usual broad grin. "Yeah. I mean, as fun as it was writing you every day, it didn't feel like enough. So I just had to come visit."

She smiled as well, her cheeks feeling a bit warmer. "Gosh! Well…thanks. For everything, I mean. I loved all the postcards, and I really wanted to write you back."

"That would've been great!" His smile was still gentle as he held a hoof out, his head tipped toward her a bit. "But I think getting to see you face-to-face is much better."

With a small nod, she then suddenly hugged him. "Yeah. Definitely much better."
