toonish's birthday, who asked for Lena helping Lexi shop for clothes. This...didn't turn out the way I intended it to go, but I hope you like it anyway!
Summary: The things you wear for specific roles or tasks.
Pushing around some of the hangers on the rack, Lena retrieves one and considers the black top for a moment before holding it up and turning to her companion. “How about this one?” she asks.
Glancing up from her phone, Lexi studies the article of clothing for a moment before shrugging, seemingly uninterested.
Their routine is all too familiar by now, so Lena hangs the top back on the rack and continues her search. “What about this?” She holds up another top.
Lexi glances up again, her brows drawing together as she frowns.
“That’s a no, then,” Lena says with a laugh, returning the piece to the rack. “Oh hey, what about this?”
As she holds up her latest find, she watches Lexi’s eyes light up a bit, though her expression remains pretty neutral as an older couple follow behind a clerk around the area they’re in. With another shrug of her shoulders, she slips her free hand into the front pocket of her green hoodie, a familiar gesture to protect herself. “I guess,” she finally answers, sounding for all the world like a bored adolescent.
It’s still a victory, though, and Lena adds it to the steadily growing pile of girls’ clothes that they’ve been gathering for the last hour or so. When the clerk leads the couple away, she sees Lexi visibly relax, despite keeping her eyes on her phone.
Unfortunately this is also pretty common, and it’s one of the unexpected perks they’ve discovered of shopping together. Because while Lexi’s family has been nothing but supportive about her identity, Lexi herself has always been the one who cared most about outward appearances, even back when she was Louie. And since the world still sees her as Louie – one of Scrooge McDuck’s grand-nephews – she continues to play that part until she has what she needs for the world to see her as Lexi.
Until then, the two of them shopping together could easily be mistaken for a boy being dragged along to shop for clothes by his girl friend (or girlfriend, they don’t bother asking). It gives Lexi a way to hide for now, and Lena doesn’t really mind playing that part either, because it gives her an excuse to have a shopping partner.
After a little while longer of hunting for a few more items (and another moment for Lena to retrieve that black top she’d found before for herself), the two finally head to check-out to make their purchase. As usual, Lexi had given her money to Lena before the trip, so as the male-looking cashier gives Lexi a sympathetic look while bagging their clothes, Lena is able to make the payment without anything looking out of place. Then Lexi takes the majority of the bags, because that’s what people expect when they see a boy and a girl shopping, and no one questions it as they walk to the exit.
They head down the street for a while before they find a quiet place with hardly anyone around. Then they rummage through the bags, separating their clothes from each other’s until each item is sorted to the right person. When they start making their way for home again, Lexi glances at her with a small smile. “...thanks,” she says after a moment. “Y’know, for always doing this with me.”
With a grin of her own, Lena shrugs. “Hey, no problem. It’s kinda fun, having a friend to shop with.”
Because in the end, that’s the real reason they started doing this, and why they shop together so often. It just made the most sense for the two of them to be shopping buddies, and it isn’t like they’d never shop with Webby or Violet. But as much as they love the other girls, Webby’s style of shopping is a little too...sparkly for their tastes. Though she’s far from a girly-girl, Webby still loves glitter and pink, and sometimes tries really hard to find them girly-type clothes, as if trying to compensate. Violet, on the other hand, usually goes in the opposite direction, and tends towards more plain and practical clothes. Which isn’t always a problem, but they both like finding things somewhere in between the two; clothes that are obviously feminine without being too much so.
More than that, though, Lena and Lexi enjoy shopping together because it gives them a chance to explore and experiment with different styles and looks. And while they don’t necessarily have the same tastes in everything, in a lot of ways, they are both rediscovering who they are as girls and the kinds of things that come with just being girls.
Even if their reasons are different, it just helps sometimes being with someone who understands what it’s like to have to try and reinvent your entire self.
