Notes: post "Friendship Hates Magic!". Frank Angones had said that by "A Nightmare on Killmotor Hill!", Lena is already living with the Sabrewings, but I've always been a bit curious about how that came about, and about Ty and Indy's first meeting with Lena. So here we are.
Summary: When Violet said she wanted to make new friends, they didn't expect her to bring one home with her.
When Violet told them that she was spending the night at a friend’s house, they had been excited. When she had brought someone home with her the next day, they had been a little curious.
But when their daughter introduced the other girl, that was what really shocked them.
“Fathers, this is Lena,” Violet announced with her familiar composure. “I would like to request that she stay with us for the time being.”
Ty and Indy exchanged a surprised look, but both also noticed that the other girl – Lena – seemed even more taken aback by the statement than they were. “Wait, say what?” she retorted.
Violet ignored her for the moment as she continued to address them. “I apologize for the abruptness of such a request, but the circumstances involved were rather unexpected.”
That was an understatement. “How long is a while?” Ty managed to ask when he could find his voice.
Violet glanced at Lena, who was starting to appear uncomfortable. “As long as we’d be able to house her,” was their daughter’s serious reply.
“Hey no, hold on a second,” Lena spoke up before either of them could even think of a response. Looking up at both of them, she flashed a small smile. “Sorry, I had no idea what she was planning. I’m just...gonna go.”
Ty and Indy both started forward, but Violet was closer and grabbed Lena’s wrist before she got too far.
“Lena, please,” Violet said. When she addressed them again, a quiet plea softened her normally even tone, “She has nowhere else to go.”
The two men drew up a bit then, once again glancing at each other. They had somewhat expected that it had to be something for their level-headed daughter to ask for such a thing as letting an unknown girl (to them) stay with them. But they hadn’t quite expected that.
“I wouldn’t say nowhere,” Lena insisted, though only half-heartedly pulled out of Violet’s grip. “I’m sure my stuff is still where I left it. Honestly, it’s no big deal.”
Somehow, the reassurance left them even more concerned. But they could see that the older girl seemed a little tense, a little guarded, and they both had a feeling that she wouldn’t tell them anything if they asked outright.
So instead Indy approached the two and offered Lena a smile. “Well hey, since you’re already here anyway, how about you at least stay for dinner? We can figure out the rest later.”
Lena seemed to consider that for a moment, and with an encouraging nod from Violet, she finally conceded. “Well...yeah, I guess that’d be okay.”
“Perfect,” Ty said with a grin, as Indy ushered the girls into the living room. “Lena, how about you pick what we’re having tonight?”
As the two girls began to discuss different dinner options, Ty and Indy shared one last look. Clearly there was something serious going on with Lena, and it was enough of a concern that Violet wanted her to stay with them. But for the moment, Lena didn’t seem too keen on sharing the details.
So for now, all they could do was try to help however they could. And hopefully someday, maybe Lena would feel comfortable enough to talk to them about it.
